Each morning before the sun warmed the stones, Liora pressed paper ribbons into the meadow grass to see which way the wind wanted to go. The ribbons usually shivered east, smelling of clover and damp earth, and Liora followed them until her shoes were silver with dew. Then, one hush-bright morning, every ribbon lay still—except one, which lifted straight up as if pulled by an invisible string. “Wait for me,” Liora whispered.
Because of that, she followed it past nodding poppies and bees that buzzed like tiny fiddles. Because of that, she met a glasswing butterfly resting on a bend in the trail, its clear wings holding the sky. The butterfly rose, and the quiet moved with it, leading Liora to a soft place where all the breezes met and rested. She tied no ribbon there.
