The secret, if you can keep it, was that Mara’s crescent mold was only pear wood, nicked by her own impatient knife, yet she carried it from the warm shed to the reed bank as if it were a crown. She wanted one clean moon pendant, made by her hands alone; instead, cold mud took her shoe, cattails hissed against her coat, and the lake doubled every wobble in the sky. At the far stone she pressed silver clay into the mold, saw the nick become a small bright planet, and laughed softly. She returned with wet socks, one pendant, and pride shaped like a crescent.
