Every day, Pax raced down the fernwood trail, pat-pat-pat, trying to reach the bend before the first jay called. He wanted to see the forest door open, but the tall trees only leaned and whispered, smelling of moss and rain.
Until one day, the path was blocked by mushrooms as round as soup bowls. Because of that, Pax had to wait. Because of THAT, he heard a tiny scratch-scratch under a plain brown leaf. “Hold still,” squeaked a beetle.
At last, Pax lifted the leaf with two careful fingers. Under it shone a small silver latch, and the trees swung wide with a whoosh. Next time you spot the fallen leaves on the trail, can you guess which one waited for Pax?
