Every afternoon, Calla returned the geography atlases to the highest shelf and slipped a dull copper bookmark into the same unread book, listening to rain tap the tall windows like impatient fingers. She wanted to know why its etched arrow warmed whenever wind shook the glass. One day the arrow spun, the book snapped open, and the room filled with the smell of wet leaves and far-off lightning.
Because of that, the cushions heaved like little hills, the rug became a map of rivers, and loose pages flashed past her knees like white birds. Because of that, Calla chased the bookmark from shelf to sill to ceiling beam, laughing as the sun carved itself beside the moon in the painted border. Finally she pinned the copper strip inside the atlas marked Unmapped, and the storm folded into a single golden leaf against the window: rain tapping, still impatient.
