Beside the herb steps, Nella pressed her nose to her mother’s old mason jar and smelled only clean glass and last summer’s dust. She wanted to carry one good scent to her new neighbor’s door, but the creekside garden hummed beyond the gate, where the grass brushed ankles and bees made a warm, zippery sound.
She tucked the jar under her arm and stepped out. Mint stung sweetly under her shoe. A burr caught her sock; a reed nicked her thumb; one daisy dropped its white petal on the path like a tiny flag. “Just one more stem,” Nella whispered, though her voice shook softer than the leaves.
By the creek, she found no single perfect smell. She found peppery grass, honeyed daisies, damp mud, and a little lavender hush. Back home, she tied the jar with a ribbon and set it between two chairs. When the neighbor came, they leaned close together and breathed in the whole brave morning—can you find the jar that still smells faintly of last summer’s dust?
