Beside the black-water canal, with mint smell rising from the mud, Liora sharpened her reed pencil and gave herself a dare: before the evening bell, she would find the rule inside the biggest dahlia. Its petals seemed to whisper in circles. She counted left, then right, but the numbers slipped away like minnows under the bridge.
A closed bud nodded on its crooked stem. “Don’t count the petals,” it said, very softly. “Count the waiting.” Liora held still. The canal clicked against the stones. In the dahlia’s tight heart, she saw each small petal making room for the next one behind it, not in a line, but in a ring, as if the flower were keeping a secret doorway open.
When the bell hummed through the reeds, Liora wrote one sentence in green ink: Dahlias keep rings so every new petal knows where to wait. Ever since, their blooms open circle after circle, and if curiosity runs away with you, can you find the tiny waiting place at the center?
