🎨 How to color it

Color the hydrangea petals in periwinkle and pale lavender, the butterfly in monarch orange with black-edged wings, and the large leaves in deep hydrangea green. Use sharp colored pencils for the many small petals and wing spots, saving broader marker strokes for the big veined leaves. Try shading the flower cluster from darker blue at the lower left to lighter lavender near the butterfly, as if it has flown toward the sunniest blooms.

The story behind this coloring page

Zadie’s Hover-Hop Game — Under the tall hydrangea hedge, Zadie snapped a grass stem like a tiny flag and invented Hover-Hop: touch no leaf, count every round bloom, and move only when the butterfly moved. Read the full story →

Under the tall hydrangea hedge, Zadie snapped a grass stem like a tiny flag and invented Hover-Hop: touch no leaf, count every round bloom, and move only when the butterfly moved. The air smelled green and peppery where fern fronds brushed her knees. “Ready, wings?” she whispered. The butterfly lifted, and Zadie sprang from shadow to shadow.

She reached nineteen blossoms fast, then had to wait. The butterfly hung beside one flower cluster, wings opening and closing like quiet doors. Bees made a fuzzy engine sound. A warm stripe of sunlight crept across the leaves, and Zadie held still until her toes tingled.

Then she saw the game had another player: the hydrangea itself. Each tiny flower turned its pale face toward the same slow light, one by one, making a secret count too gentle to hurry. Zadie grinned and changed the rule: the winner was whoever noticed the last bloom wake up. Next time you spot the butterfly by the big round blossoms, see if you can find the one Zadie waited for, under the tall hydrangea hedge.
