Every day, Raffi dragged the striped umbrella to the same quiet patch of sand, planted its pole with a squeak, and waited for the shade to slide over his book. The umbrella never opened on the first try. It coughed sand, snapped its ribs, and made a rude flup-flup sound while gulls laughed from the wrack line. Raffi would count to twenty, wiggle the crank, and try again.
Until one day, the umbrella opened with a pop so loud that a crab dropped its seaweed sandwich. Because of that, a tiny cloth pocket flipped out from beneath the top stripe. Because of THAT, three damp paper flags tumbled down, each marked with a crooked arrow and the words, “NOT HERE, NOSY.” Raffi grinned. “Oh, it’s going to be like that?”
He followed the arrows past prickly dune grass, a starfish-shaped puddle, and shells that smelled like salt and warm pennies. Finally, under the umbrella’s own pole, he found a tin whistle packed in sea foam and a note: WAIT LONG ENOUGH, AND THE SHADE TELLS. Raffi blew one tiny tweet. Far off, the lighthouse answered with a blink. Next time you spot those stripes, check the quiet places first—patience may be hiding under the shade.
