Before supper, a green glow slid over Junie’s cabin window like silk. She wanted everyone in the valley to see it, so she grabbed the porch bell rope. Clong—no sound. The bell’s little clapper was gone. Junie tucked a biscuit in her pocket and stepped into the snowy hush, past prickly pines and smooth white fields, to ask the night-herder for help.
The wind nipped her nose, and her biscuit crumbled for the sparrows. “Just one ring,” Junie whispered. On the hill, she found the herder’s old mitten stuck on a branch where nobody ever looked. Inside was the bell clapper, warm as a secret. Junie ran home, fixed the bell, and rang it bright. Doors opened. Faces lifted. The sky poured color over every roof. Next time you see those ribbons above the little cabin, can you hear Junie’s one ring?
