Every evening, Della stirred spruce-needle soup with a bent tin spoon, tapping the pot three times before reading the weather in the steam. Until one day the roof dripped straight into supper—plink, plunk, plop—and the steam spelled, quite rudely, GO OUT. Because of that, she marched toward the stream clutching the spoon like a royal scepter; because of that, the slippery stones seemed to snicker under her boots. Finally, she planted the spoon in the mud, took one brave, wobbly step, and laughed when the mountains echoed her tiny clank.
