🎨 How to color it

Layer saffron yellow and soft ocher on the duck’s body, teal on the wing feathers, blush pink on the lotus flowers, and deep green on the lily pads. Use sharp colored pencils for the tiny spirals, teardrops, and petal bands, coloring each repeated shape before moving to the next ring. For a polished twist, fade the pond ripples from pale aqua near the duck to smoky blue at the page edges.

Between us, Clover had made a game of crossing only where moonlight touched the water: one silver stripe, one breath, one glide. The near reeds smelled of wet mint, but the far lotus held a pale seedpod she wanted for her shelf of almost-brave things. She pushed out, and the pond answered with cold rings against her chest; halfway there, a frog’s plunk broke the pattern, and she nearly turned back. Instead, she paid one small price—her perfect rule—and followed the broken light. She came home with no seedpod, only the secret sound of her own wake, one silver stripe, one breath, one glide.
