Every evening, Dax tugged his ribbon and made the crooked branch go creak-creak for the bats’ moon dance. He wanted the biggest, funniest creak of all, but the branch only gave a tiny squeak that sounded like a hiccup.
Until one night, the ribbon stuck. Because of that, Dax bounced and bonked his leafy curls. Because of that, something inside his hanging loop went tickle-tickle and sneezed, “Boo!” Out popped three dust-mice wearing star hats. They had been hiding where nobody ever looked, saving their giggles for the perfect creak. Finally, Dax swung once, the mice shouted, and the branch roared, “CREEEAK!” The bats flapped upside down laughing. Next time you spot Dax’s loop, see if the star-hat mice are still exactly where they belong.
