🎨 How to color it

Color the squirrels warm chestnut brown, the woven nest sandy tan, the berry clusters ruby red, and the small flowers soft butter yellow. Use sharp colored pencils for the crisscrossing twigs, following one twig at a time so the nest stays clear and basket-like. Try making each curled tail a little lighter at the tip, as if morning light is brushing through the branches.

Under the berry branches, Sable pressed a tiny shell button into the nest wall every morning: tap, tap, snug. It was not shiny. It was not useful for soup or shelter. But it had come from the first nest she could remember, and when the kits curled near it, the whole place smelled right—twig-dry, leaf-sweet, and theirs. Then a jay’s blue wing flashed, the button popped loose, and down it bounced through the leaves.

Now here is the part you must keep secret: Sable was afraid of the lower branches. They creaked like old doors, and beetles clicked under the bark. Still, she climbed down, whiskers full of damp moss smell, and found the button wedged beside a sleeping moth. To reach it, she had to give up the softest strip of cedar from her own corner, sliding it under the moth like a blanket. “Fair trade,” she whispered.

When Sable carried the button back, the nest felt colder without her cedar strip. Then the kits scooted close, one warm back, then another, then another, until her empty corner became the warmest place of all. She pressed the button in: tap, tap, snug. Next time you spot the berries around their nest, see if you can keep Sable’s secret too—the smallest thing there is the one that says home.
