🎨 How to color it

Color the squirrel warm chestnut, the bow tie sky blue with yellow dots, the jam jar ruby red, and the mixed berries in blueberry, raspberry, and golden currant shades. Use sharp colored pencils for the basket weave, bow dots, berry clusters, and tiny flowers, then switch to smoother strokes for the squirrel’s big tail and the open picnic blanket. Try making the smiling sun pale lemon and the tree leaves two alternating greens so the picnic feels bright without crowding the small details.

Under the morning sun, Rue tucked a single cookie crumb beneath his blue bow and set out his picnic in the garden grass. The crumb was no bigger than a seed, but Rue kept touching it with one paw because its cracked edge reminded him of a path he had dreamed about while rain tapped the roof. Berries smelled sweet and cool on the plate. The jam jar shone like a little red window.

He nibbled the cookie slowly, listening to bees buzz over the flowers and the basket creak in the warm air. Each bite left a new corner, and each corner seemed to point somewhere: first to the spoon, then the bread, then the round blueberries piled in the middle. Rue whispered, “What are you trying to show me?”

Then a breeze rolled one raspberry aside. Beneath the fruit, blueberry juice had drawn the same crooked shape as the crumb. The whole picnic had been making a map back to his dream. Next time you find Rue in the garden grass, see if the berries still point where the tiny crumb points under his bow.
