Behind the blue curtain, a tiny bell went tling-tling, then stopped. Briella wanted it back on Pip’s collar before nap bells rang, so she stepped off her warm rug and into the round cushion room. The floor felt cold through her slippers. “Secret feet,” she whispered.
Pip pounced first. Briella followed, but the big cushion gave a soft whoof and tipped her crown sideways. She had to crawl under its edge, where dust tickled her nose. There, tucked where nobody ever checked, was not the bell but a paper mouse smelling like cedar.
