🎨 How to color it

Color the squirrel warm chestnut brown, the jack-o'-lantern bright pumpkin orange, the oak leaves golden yellow, and the little bat smoky purple. Use chunky crayons or broad markers for the big squirrel tail and pumpkin sections, and don’t worry if the color wiggles over the bold lines. Try making the moon pale lemon and the stars silver-blue so the bat’s wings pop against the night.

Under the cool moon, Zadie stuffed one shiny acorn into her paws and scampered down the winding pumpkin path. She wanted every cricket, worm, and sleepy moth to hear her new happy chant: “Tap-tap, acorn clap!” Dry oak leaves scratched above her like tiny paper drums, and the big carved pumpkin glowed with a warm, spicy smell.

Zadie tapped the acorn on the pumpkin stem. Tok! A tiny bat dropped upside down from the darkness, not to scare her, but to answer with wing beats: flap-flap, tok! More stars seemed to wink as Zadie laughed so hard her tail bounced. She lifted the acorn like a parade bell, and the bat danced on the pumpkin top. Next time you spot that moonlit pumpkin grin, can you hear Zadie’s tap-tap, acorn clap?
