Every day, Orvin carried one snack to school and tapped it twice: tok-tok. He had invented the Apple-Listening Game, and he wanted to hear the apple answer before the bell rang. Mostly, he heard buses sigh, shoes scuff, and leaves scratch softly over the sidewalk.
Until one day, his apple was so big he had to hug it with both paws. Because of that, he walked slowly. Because of that, he reached the gate after the rushing crowd had gone inside. At last, in the hush, the apple made a tiny creak.
“Did you hear?” Orvin whispered. A brown seed peeked from the stem, ready for soil. Next time you see his careful smile, listen for tok-tok.
