Under the warm cedar roof of her nest, Tansy saved a bare twig by the door. She wanted one orange leaf to hang there before moonrise. When a maple leaf skittered past with a dry scritch-scratch, she hopped after it, out over the cool fallen log.

Halfway across, the leaf stopped. Beneath it sat a tiny black beetle polishing a silver seed. “Wait,” he clicked. Tansy’s paws tingled on the bark, but she waited while the fern shadows grew long. At last the beetle rolled the seed aside, and a hidden orange leaf slid free, smooth as sunshine. Tansy carried it home slowly, listening for that secret scritch-scratch—can you spot the leaf that made her wait?
