Every day, Tovala carved one more curl into a plain acorn shell, rubbing it with cedar dust until her paws smelled sharp and clean; it was only a charm to others, but to her it was the first thing she had made without copying anyone. Then the reed ferry snapped loose in a storm. Because of that, she lashed her acorn to a twig and read the water by its spinning grooves; because of that, the ferrymice rowed where the current sang silver under rain. At dawn, Tovala held her small stormwheel high, proud of every handmade curl.
