The silver thread on Imogen’s worktable kept slipping toward the window, bright as a question. She wanted only one strand to mend the old stocking’s torn loop, the last thing her sister had packed before leaving. Out onto the clocktower roof she went, losing a glove to the cold brass ladder, following the thread as it snagged on frost, bells, and a sleeping weather vane. Imogen came back with numb fingers, one glove, and the silver thread bright as a question.
