Under the piney-smelling tree, Pip patted the fat stocking and whispered, “No peeking—only sneaking!” He had just invented Stocking Sneak, a game where each player guessed a surprise by hearing one tiny sound. Shake-shake meant candy cane. Crinkle-crinkle meant a wrapped box. Flop meant a bow had fallen on somebody’s nose. Pip tucked in a striped sweet, three little presents, and one ribbon that wiggled like a sleepy worm.
The game grew sillier when the ornaments began answering too. The round ball went bong, the star went tink, and the holly berries made a tiny pop-pop-pop like elf hiccups. Pip laughed so hard his socks slid on the rug. “You’re playing too!” he told the tree. From then on, Stocking Sneak belonged to everyone in the cozy corner: boy, stocking, ribbons, bells, and branches. If you spot the dangling star and the candy cane, you’ll know exactly where the next shake-shake begins.
