Every morning, Saffron raced the same cedar-ravine path, tapping three flat stones with her paws—tik, tik, tik—before breakfast. She wanted to be quick enough to join the ridge messengers, who carried urgent news between trees. Until one morning, the third stone answered with a hollow rattle that buzzed up through her toes like a trapped bee.
Because of that, Saffron stopped instead of sprinting past. Because of THAT, the wind shoved a fallen leaf aside, and she spotted a thin silver thread leading under the biggest fern, where nobody ever looked because the fronds were scratchy and smelled like rain-soaked pepper. Her whiskers shook. “Just one paw,” she whispered, and pushed in.
Under the fern lay a tiny cedar-bark tube, sealed with mud and tied to the silver thread. Inside was a note from the ridge messengers: BRIDGE OUT. SEND WARNING. Saffron’s heart thumped louder than her paws as she bolted down the winding path, tail high, calling until every treetop guard heard. Next time you see her near the ferns, see if you can guess which stone went tik, tik, rattle.
