Under the whispering trees, Princess Odette folded rose petals into tiny boats with stems for masts and named her new game Drift-and-Dock. She wanted one boat to circle the dry stone fountain all the way around, a gift she had made herself for the gardeners’ spring breakfast. But the basin held only dust, warm as flour, and her first petal boat sat still on the stone.
Odette fetched a silver cup from the pump, then another, and another, until her sleeves smelled of roses and wet metal. “One more for my fleet,” she told a butterfly resting on the rim. When she poured the last cup, the fountain gave a soft glug, as if waking from a nap. Water climbed the center bowl, spilled in clear ribbons, and lifted every petal boat into a bright, turning parade.
The gardeners found Odette smiling beside her handmade fleet, and they never emptied that basin again. Ever since, the castle fountain has tossed its water high so children can sail small proud things made by hand—and if you spot the princess near the roses, you may find the first petal boat still making its circle under the whispering trees.
