🎨 How to color it

Layer the girl's hair in deep indigo and violet, make the daisies warm white with golden centers, color the tiny stars pale yellow, and give her puff-sleeve dress a soft pearl blue. Use sharp pencils for the narrow hair ribbons, dotted flower centers, and scattered mini stars, working in small sections so the fine lines stay crisp. For a secretive glow, blend a faint silver-lavender wash through the background swirls while keeping the star pendant brighter than everything around it.

Under the rooftop aviary’s glass ribs, Mira counted wind-daisies by lamplight and pretended the open catwalk beyond the sorting alcove was not waiting for her. One blossom had slipped through the grating into the dark fern gutter, and without it the night register would be one white circle short; the little brass floor trembled under her shoes as she stepped out, smelling rain on metal and the peppery breath of leaves.

Halfway across, the aviary doves beat their wings at nothing. The gust stole two pins from Mira’s hair and sent silver strands whipping across her mouth, but she crouched anyway, fingers brushing mud, stem, then a cold edge beneath the flower. A hidden latch clicked where nobody dusted. Inside the gutter, tucked under moss, lay a folded strip of sky-paper marked with the same crooked star she wore at her throat.

She carried back the daisy, the muddy message, and one less pin in her hair. By the lamp, her pendant warmed against her skin as the paper unfolded itself: WHEN THE SMALL STAR OPENS, COME UP BEFORE DAWN. Mira did not feel brave. She felt the rain drying on her wrists, and the catwalk no longer looked empty under the rooftop aviary’s glass ribs.
