At the blossom pass, the festival bell gave one lonely clonk, and Sena tucked the blank announcement scroll under her arm. She had to carry it to the far torii before sunset, or nobody would know where to bring lanterns, drums, or honey rice cakes. The paper smelled of cedar and ink, but every word she brushed onto it faded like breath on glass.
Then a petal landed on the scroll and winked. Not a pretend wink. A real one. A wind-spirit, small as a plum pit, rolled out laughing. “Secrets are too heavy!” it squeaked. Sena tried not to grin, because ninja are supposed to be quiet, but joy bubbled up in her like shaken soda.
So she let the spirit dance across the paper. Wherever its petal-feet tapped, marks sprang up: drums, lanterns, cakes, moon, gate. Sena ran the scroll down the path, shouting nothing at all, and everyone understood. Ever since, ninja festival scrolls carry pictures beside words, because some happiness is too big to keep secret. If you spot the petal marks, you’re in on it too.
