🎨 How to color it

Try sage and olive greens on the tall cactus and prickly pear pads, terracotta for the striped mountains, and golden yellow for the huge sun. Use sharp pencils on the cactus spines, flower petals, tiny stars, and dotted sky, then switch to smooth marker fills for the larger cactus ribs. For a groovy twist, blend peach into lavender along the sun rays and echo those colors lightly inside the cloud swirls.

Every day, Zadie measured the noon glare by the crisp smell of hot sand and the way lizards lifted one foot, then the other, like tiny dancers with regrets. She wanted to make the cactus wash less brutal without anyone thanking her, so she invented Shade Shuffle: steal a sliver of shadow from one rock, slide it behind a yucca, and whistle before the sun noticed. One day the whistle came out backwards, and every shadow in the wash leapt left with a soft, papery flap.

Because of that, a caravan’s water jars stopped boiling under the sudden striped shade; because of that, the travelers napped instead of turning back, while Zadie hid behind a barrel cactus and tried not to snort. “Absolutely legal,” she told a beetle. At dusk, she shuffled the shadows home again, leaving one cool patch under the tallest blooming cactus. Finally, nobody saw her bow to the warm wind, except the beetle, the flowers, and the one foot, then the other, of grateful lizards.
