Before sunrise, quick-hoofed Novi raced up Rainbow Hill and tapped five stone markers before the first gold beam warmed her nose. Every day she tried to beat her own time: hoof-click, breath-puff, leaf-swish, higher and higher. But one morning, the mist smelled like wet chalk, and the marker stones had vanished under gray fog.
Novi almost turned back until she heard a tiny cough below the trail. A line of beetle caravans, carrying crumb baskets, had lost the path to the dew market. “I can still finish,” Novi whispered, then snapped bright ribbons from her neck pouch and tied one to each hidden marker. Because of that, the beetles found the first bend. Because of THAT, sleepy birds followed the ribbons too, dropping seeds where the fog had soaked the grass.
At the top, Novi missed her best time by a mile. Then the sun burst through, striking every ribbon at once, and color leaped across the hill in five bold bands. No one cheered; the beetles were already gone. Novi only smiled, warm-nosed and muddy-hooved. Next time you see her beneath those bands, can you guess which colors she left for strangers in the mist?
