🎨 How to color it

Color the sun’s face golden yellow, the crescent moon soft lavender, the smiling clouds pale blue, and the flower suns coral and teal. Use sharp colored pencils for the tiny dots, zigzags, scallops, and narrow rainbow stripes, saving markers for the larger cloud puffs and sun rays. Try making the curling sky bands fade from turquoise to violet so the warm sun and coral flowers glow against a cool, secret-night background.

Under the pattern loft’s crooked rafters, Kiri rubbed her mother’s plain wooden stylus between her palms. The little tool smelled of cedar and old rain. She wanted to print one ribbon of night-cloth before the moon rose, a ribbon good enough to hang between the sun and the first cloud. But every strip she pulled from the press came out blank, pale as milk.

A soft click sounded inside the stylus. Kiri held it to the lantern and saw a secret groove no wider than a grass blade, carved with dots, waves, and tiny teeth. “You kept a sky in there,” she whispered. She pressed the stylus along the moon’s silver edge. The loft hummed. Lines spilled out: scallops, spirals, little stars, flower marks, and rainbow roads that smelled faintly of warm dust.

The moon wore Kiri’s handmade ribbon proudly, and even the clouds grinned at the strange new glow. Ever since, moonlight has never fallen plain; it carries small patterns for anyone patient enough to notice. Next time you see the crescent tucked beside the sun, can you find the dots and waves from the cedar stylus?
