🎨 How to color it

Color the mermaid’s tail seafoam green, her shell-decorated bag coral pink, the Sea School arch sandy beige, and the little fish bright yellow. Use sharp colored pencils for the many tail scales, hair strands, letters, and tiny shells, then fill the desks and doorway with steadier marker strokes. Try a pale blue wash behind the classroom bubbles so the white map, lesson board, and starfish hair clip still pop.

Under the coral arch, a tiny chalk-shell clicked in Suri’s palm: tik, tik, tik. She wanted one mark on the Sea School board beside her name before the morning current bell rang. Not a fancy mark—just a clean white dash. The chalk-shell had belonged to her big cousin, who said it only wrote for patient hands. Secretly, Suri thought that sounded like an excuse for old, crumbly chalk.

She slipped from her safe doorway and swam between the desks, past the map that smelled faintly of salt glue. A nosy silver fish bumped her bag, and one shell button popped loose. Suri could have chased it, but the teacher’s board waited, blank and important. She pressed the chalk-shell down. Nothing. She waited while bubbles tickled her wrist. “Come on,” she whispered. At last, the shell left one thin line—then another, then a little arrow pointing behind the board.

There, tucked in seaweed dust, was the missing class sponge, dry as driftwood and badly needed. Suri gave up her perfect name mark to wipe the board clean for everyone. By bell time, the teacher wrote SURI in the corner with the same chalk-shell, bright as a moonbeam. If you spot that busy school board, keep the secret: the smallest white dash began with tik, tik, tik.
