🎨 How to color it

Color the mermaid’s tail turquoise with sea-green scales, her long hair coral pink, the corked bottle pale aqua, and the big spiral snail shell sandy gold. Use sharp colored pencils for the tail scales, hair ribbons, snail-shell rings, and tiny bubbles so the narrow lines stay crisp. Try making the water lines fade from light blue near her face to deeper blue behind her sweeping hair, as if a fast current is carrying her forward.

Every day before the tide race, Coralie zipped through courier shoal with her satchel bumping her hip and one corked bottle held tight. The bottle always sang when it carried the right message: ping-ping-ping against the glass. But this one only sloshed. “No song, no stop,” Captain Wrasse had warned, and the starting current already roared like rain on a roof.

Until one day, a giant sea snail parked itself across the route, waving both feelers at her. Coralie swerved, sand puffing under her tail, and the silent bottle slipped from her fingers. Because of that, she chased it into the snail’s shadow. Because of that, she heard a tiny ping-ping-ping—not from the bottle, but from inside the snail’s striped spiral shell.

Coralie pressed her ear to the cool curve. A rolled map clicked out, smelling of salt and old kelp, marked with the missing gate for the tide race. The empty bottle had been a decoy; the message had ridden where no shark, gull, or nosy crab would search. Coralie tucked the map safely away and shot into the current exactly on time, right where she belonged. If you follow the big spiral shell, you may still hear the ping-ping-ping.
