🎨 How to color it

Give the mermaid’s tail deep teal scales, her snowflake ornaments icy blue, the seal soft silver-gray, and the distant mountains pale lavender. Use sharp colored pencils for the tiny scales, hair strands, seal whiskers, and snowflake points, then broader side-strokes for the rolling water and open sky. Try a cold-to-warm contrast by shading the sea in blue-greens while adding a faint peach glow to the mermaid’s face and hands.

Under the blue-white cliffs, Kestrel polished a tiny snow-key no longer than her thumb. It looked like a chipped bit of frost, but she carried it tucked beneath a scale because her first winter song had frozen inside it. Around her, the sea breathed hush-hush against the ice, and snowflakes touched her hair without melting. She wanted to hear that song once more before the long polar night turned the water black.

She set the key on a flat ledge and hummed. The sound came back thin as a shell edge. A young seal lifted his round head from the ice, whiskers shining with salt, and answered with one soft bark. “Again?” Kestrel whispered. She hummed, he barked, and the key glittered brighter each time, as if it liked two voices better than one.

Then the ledge itself began to sing. Not loudly—just a deep silver tremble under Kestrel’s palm. The snow-key had never held her song alone; it had been waiting for a seal’s note to unlock the rest. Soon the waves carried the tune to every floe, and far-off seals raised their faces to join. If you trace the snowflakes around Kestrel, can you almost hear the joy traveling hush-hush across the ice?
