🎨 How to color it

Give the mermaid’s tail a seafoam green, her flowing hair a sandy blonde, the anchor a soft blue-gray, and the shells a peachy pink. Use chunky crayons for the big tail, anchor, and bubbles, and don’t worry if little hands color over the tiny fish or starfish. For a playful sticker look, make each hair star a different bright color, like coral, yellow, and aqua.

The story behind this coloring page

Why Anchors Wear Ropes — Under the hush-hush waves, Kiva blew three shiny bubbles for her new game. Read the full story →

Under the hush-hush waves, Kiva blew three shiny bubbles for her new game. “Tag the tallest thing,” she whispered, but the tallest thing was the old anchor, and its iron sides looked cold and bumpy.

The bubbles bobbed away—plip, plop, plip—right toward it. Kiva tucked one brave finger around a loose sea-rope and pulled. The rope wrapped the anchor in a twisty hug, soft as a wet braid, and the anchor stopped groaning in the sand.

So here is the secret: ever since Kiva’s first small touch, anchors wear ropes to feel less lonely. Can you spot the twisty hug under the hush-hush waves?
