🎨 How to color it

Color the pickup cherry red with yellow lightning bolts, give the checkered flag crisp black-and-white squares, and shade the stadium seats cool steel blue. Use sharp colored pencils for the zigzag decals, tire treads, and flag grid, then switch to broader strokes for the wide track lanes. Try a smoky tan dust cloud behind the rear wheels so the red truck looks like it just blasted through the final turn.

Under the empty speedway seats, Quinn spread two scraps of cloth on the warm concrete: one white, one black, both smelling faintly of glue and rain. He wanted a finish flag sturdy enough for his little pickup, Bolt, before the sun slipped behind the hills. The problem was the cloth kept twisting in the wind, and his plain white flag vanished against the pale track wall.

Then something chittered inside the snack stand. Out padded a raccoon with powdered sugar on its whiskers and a napkin stuck to one paw. “You’re hiding your finish,” it said, as if this were normal. The raccoon dipped its paw in the sugar, pressed white marks on the black cloth, then tapped crumbs onto the white. Quinn stared. Squares! He cut, stitched, and tied them together, his fingers sticky and proud.

When Bolt roared around the curve, the new flag flashed dark-light, dark-light, impossible to miss. The drivers asked for more, and Quinn only winked. Ever since, finish flags have worn checks, and if you spot the one waving by the bend, you’ll know which secret paw helped make it.
