Every evening, Bex tucked a dented bottle-cap whistle into her mitten and rode the ridge plow after the last cocoa cart had gone. She wanted the first clean stripe on Switchback Ridge to end with one secret toot: peep! The whistle had belonged to her big brother, who said it could make snowflakes hop if you blew it at the right bump.
One day, the plow hit a hidden lump with a WHUMP, and the whistle popped from Bex’s mitten into the curled snow rolling off the blade. Because of that, every shove of snow gave a silly peep. Because of that, foxes peeked from spruce shadows, skiers slid out laughing, and cabin doors banged open as neighbors followed the squeaky trail.
At the last bend, Bex scooped up the whistle, cold and crusted with ice. “One more?” called the plow driver. Bex blew hard. Peep-peep-POW! Snow burst like popcorn along the bank, and everyone cheered so loudly the hills seemed to chuckle. Next time you spot the blade curling snow aside, imagine the tiny whistle tucked in that frosty roll: peep!
