🎨 How to color it

Color the soft-serve ribbons in vanilla cream and strawberry pink, make the waffle cone golden brown, and give the star sprinkles lemon yellow against a mint-green shop wall. Use sharp colored pencils for the cone’s crisscross waffle pattern and the tiny jar labels, then switch to smooth marker strokes for the broad swirls of ice cream. Try shading the striped wafer from cocoa brown to caramel so it looks tucked deep inside the creamy tower.

After the last bell on Juniper Street, Oren sat in the Moonlit Creamery with his notebook open and his spoon untouched. He wanted to name the new midnight flavor, but he had promised to wait until the soft-serve finished its slow spiral in the silver machine. The room smelled of sugar cones and warm brick, and jars on the shelves clicked softly as they cooled. Above the counter, the hanging lamp made a small circle of honey-colored light.

The swirl rose higher than Oren expected, ribbon over ribbon, quiet as snow piling on a fence post. He counted the little candy stars as they appeared from the dispenser: one, two, three, then a fourth near the curve where the cream bent like a wave. “Not yet,” whispered Mr. Vale, setting a striped wafer into the side. Oren let the spoon rest, patient enough to hear the freezer hum under the floorboards.

Then the top curl folded open by itself. Inside, where nobody had thought to look, was a tiny blue spoon made of frozen moonlight, holding one glowing drop of flavor. Oren tasted it, and the name arrived without hurrying: Midnight Vanilla. If you study the tall swirl, maybe you can find the quiet place where Oren waited with his spoon untouched.
