The river whispered silver below the cliffs, and Tessa kept counting wingbeats from the safe middle of the flock. One-two-three, breathe. One-two-three, don’t look down. The older ducks had asked her to lead just until the bend, where the mountains split like a dark doorway, but the wind up front sounded too big, all hush and bite and pine-cold air.
Then the crescent moon slipped into the river, and here is the secret: nobody ever thought to look for directions in water that was moving. Tessa glanced down by accident and saw a bright arrow trembling under the ripples, made from moonlight and fish scales. It pointed not straight, but slantwise, toward a path where the wind parted gently. “There,” Tessa quacked, small but clear. She flew to the point, and the flock followed on both sides, each duck riding the easy air spilling from the wings ahead.
By the time they crossed the snowy peaks, Tessa’s beak was cold and her courage felt no bigger than a pebble, but it was hers. Ever since that night, traveling ducks have flown in a V, the sky arrow Tessa found where nobody looked. Next time you see them overhead, keep the secret: one brave duck is reading the river below.
