🎨 How to color it

Try pumpkin orange for the smiling gourds, navy and cream for the plaid panels, golden yellow for the flowers, and chestnut brown for the acorns. Use sharp colored pencils for the leaf veins, dots, stripes, and plaid lines, then fill the larger pumpkin faces with smooth marker strokes. For a preppy twist, alternate blush pink and sage green on a few leaves so the orange pumpkins pop from the patterned pile.

Under the library steps, where dry leaves clicked like tiny cards, Daphne tapped her pencil against her notebook. She had challenged herself to find one pattern that repeated three times before the bell rang. Plaid pumpkin, smiling flower, acorn cap—easy. But the third plaid pumpkin seemed to wink from deeper in the crunchy patch.

“Don’t tell anyone,” whispered a bow tied around two stems, “but the pile answers only if you notice what does not match.” Daphne stepped off the warm stone and into the rustle. A burr snagged her sock, and one page tore loose, skittering under striped leaves. She almost chased it back, but curiosity pulled harder than the cold air nipped.

At the smallest pumpkin, she saw it: dots beside plaid, stars beside vines, every repeat had one odd little friend. Daphne hurried back with a leaf in her hair and wrote the password in the margin: different. Next time you study the busy patch, can you spot the odd little friends hiding beside the repeats, where dry leaves click like tiny cards?
