🎨 How to color it

Color the elephant a soft dove gray, fill the checkered ear panels with bubblegum pink and black, and make the cherries glossy red with mint leaves. Use a sharp colored pencil for the checkerboard squares so the edges stay crisp, then switch to broader strokes for the elephant’s wide forehead and trunk. Try giving every smiling daisy a different preppy petal color—navy, coral, lavender, and lime—while keeping their round faces sunny yellow.

Every afternoon, under the sour-sweet smell of cherry trees, Junie lined up black and white cloth squares on a stump and stitched them into a tiny flag. She had set herself one rule: no help, not even from the daisies that hummed when the wind combed their petals.

Until one day, a cherry popped loose above her work—plip!—and splashed red across the corner. Because of that, Junie carried the cloth to the brook, but the current tugged it into ripples. Because of that, the squares wobbled into a new pattern, and Junie saw her mistake shimmering like a secret map.

“I can make that,” she whispered. She sewed the red stain into a cherry mark, added a wavy border, and fastened the flag between two smooth twigs. By sunset, the orchard breeze lifted Junie’s first handmade banner, crooked and grand. If you spot the cherries near her ears, imagine the little plip that began it all under the sour-sweet cherry trees.
