Before the jungle warmed, Goro lifted his trunk for his first dawn trumpet and tasted wet leaves, mineral dust, and a tickle of courage. He had practiced only in puddles, where sounds came back politely. The sun climbed, the clouds cracked open, and bright bars slid between the trees. Then one sunbeam landed on his trunk, sneezed first, and made a tiny golden toot. Goro stared; the beam bowed as if it had meant to perform. “My turn,” he murmured, and gave one wobbly note. Leaves flashed, birds laughed, and the little toot braided itself through his own, warming the wet leaves, mineral dust, and tickle of courage.
