Behind the tiny salon sink, Zadie reached for the polka-dot ribbon she kept for her cart. It had slipped behind the round mirror, where the glass smelled like lemon soap and warm towels. She tiptoed past the bottles, nudged the plant aside, and heard, “Hmmm-tick, hmmm-tick.”
A comb slid out, buzzing in her palm like a sleepy bee. “Brush three curls,” it whispered, “and hear the hidden tune.” Zadie brushed one, two, three. The tune made her cheeks pop into a grin, but the comb snagged her best hair bow as payment. She ran back and hummed it for everyone waiting by the chairs.
