Under the creaky harbor dock, where ropes smelled salty and gulls clacked overhead, Pippa set herself a tiny challenge: she would say hello to every boat before supper. She waved both claws at the tall boats. Clack-clack! Not one sailor looked down.
So Pippa tucked her feet by the smooth pebbles and blew into the water: bloop, bloop, bloop, bloop. Four bubbles popped up beside the seaweed, round and shiny as secrets. A child on a boat gasped, “The crab is waving!” Pippa lifted her claws high, exactly where she belonged. Ever since, harbor crabs send bubbles first, and if you spot four rising together, you’ll know who is saying hello.
