Down Lantern Lane, Avi patted his pumpkin belly and made a tiny challenge: one treat for every glowing porch light. He stepped from the cozy wagon onto the leaf-crackly sidewalk, bucket bump-bump-bumping at his knee. A cool wind tugged his vine hat, and a paper bat on a fence went flap-flap-flap. Avi held out his bucket and whispered, “One more.”
At the last porch, his mitten slipped, and three candies rolled under a mum pot with a dry little skitter. Avi’s eyes grew round, but the porch cat nudged one back with a soft purr. Avi dropped that candy into the cat’s empty treat bowl instead. Then he carried his jingling bucket home and poured the rest between every waiting hand. His smile got bigger than all the porch lights, and next time you spot the tiny bat, maybe you’ll hear Avi’s bucket going bump-bump down Lantern Lane.
