Every evening, Bramble carried a chalk-white pebble under his chin and led his two little cousins along the quiet bend where the trees leaned in like listeners. The pebble looked ordinary, but it had been found beside his first doorway, and its cool weight told him, step by step, that home was not behind him.
Until one day, rain turned the path into a silver thread of water. Because of that, the pebble slipped, clicked down a root, and stopped beside a tuft of grass. Because of that, Bramble noticed a dry rise under the hazel bushes, warm with leaf-dust and smelling of moss.
“Here?” whispered one cousin. Bramble pressed his nose to the pebble, then to the earth. Finally, he tucked the pebble at the new doorway, where evening light pooled softly and all three hedgehogs fit beneath the hush of branches. Next time you see their winding path, see if you can spot the place where cool stone and mossy ground decided they belonged.
