Behind the glass showroom, Tobin pressed one finger to the cold door and listened to the muscle car sit silent under the drooping cloth banner. He had brought a tiny brass key from his uncle’s toolbox, hoping it might fit something, anything, before the night guard’s shoes squeaked back across the tile. The car smelled like dust, old rubber, and rain trapped in a garage. Its black stripes ran over the hood like two paths into the dark scoop.

“Just one sound,” Tobin whispered. The key did not fit the door, the trunk, or the small lock by the gas cap. Then a moth fluttered from the banner and vanished straight into the hood scoop. Tobin stood on his toes, heart bumping, and slid his hand into the cool shadow where nobody would think to hide a lock. His fingers found a brass slot, warm as if it had been waiting.

The key turned with a click. Not an engine roar, but a low, brave whistle rolled through the showroom, shook the windows, and made the round headlights gleam. Since that night, every true muscle car has kept a scoop on its hood—not only for air, but to hide its first whistle until someone small and scared reaches in anyway. If you check the dark mouth on the hood, you may catch the secret still humming.
