Every evening, Toby carried his tin whistle to the high road and blew one soft note toward the cliffs. He wanted the mountain to answer. The wind smelled like warm dust and pine, but the rocks stayed quiet. Then one evening, a red muscle car rolled up and stopped beside him without a rumble. Its round headlights glowed like two moons. “Are you waiting too?” Toby whispered.
Because of that, Toby did not blow his whistle right away. He sat on the curb, listening to the tiny tick-tick of the cooling engine. Because of that, he heard a faraway sound slide between the cliffs: whooo, whooo, whooo. Finally, Toby played one note, and the car’s deep horn answered so gently that the whole pass hummed back. Next time you see those wide tires at the overlook, can you imagine the mountain answering one soft note?
