Every day, before the pearl lamps dimmed, Neria swam through the coral archive and tapped each shell jar: tick, tick, hum. She wanted to record one new reef echo before moonrise, but the jars only answered with crab scratches, sleepy turtle sighs, and the soft fizz of sand.
Until one day, a sound curved through the stacks—click-click, then a pause that felt like a question. Neria chased it past red coral branches and a jellyfish glowing like a tiny umbrella. Because of that, the current curled backward and scattered her blank labels like white minnows. Because of that, she followed the labels into open blue water, where a dolphin waited with bright eyes and a grin full of secrets.
“Did you call me?” Neria asked. The dolphin clicked once, and the bubbles around them formed a path no map had drawn. Neria took his fin, and the water shivered with a sound she had never caught: curiosity running ahead of her. If you trace the bubble trail after moonrise, you may find where Neria first followed the question current.
