🎨 How to color it

Color the princess’s gown lavender, her crown golden yellow, the hedge maze deep emerald, and the castle stones cool gray with red-and-gold banners. Use sharp colored pencils for the many little leaves and brick lines, then fill the wider paths with light, even strokes. Try making the key bright copper so it glows like a clue in the middle of all that green.

Between walls of clipped boxwood, Daria carried a silver bell in her pocket, saving its ring for the first person who found the morning’s hidden gate. The maze smelled of rain and crushed leaves, and every turn made a soft shush against her sleeves. She wanted the joy of discovery to arrive all at once, like sunlight spilling over a wall.

At the fourth bend, a tiny key lay on the path, humming in a voice no louder than a bee. “Not the lock,” it sang. Daria knelt. The castle gate stood ahead, iron teeth shining, but the key kept pointing sideways, toward the hedge, toward the rustling green, toward all the unseen paths where gardeners, pages, cooks, and sleepy dogs were wandering.

Then Daria understood: the key was not asking to be used, but shared. She rang her bell once—clear, bright, ting!—and every hedge answered with footsteps and laughter. When the gate opened, nobody could say who found it first. If you trace the turns back from the little key, can you hear how big one small ring became?
