🎨 How to color it

Color the mermaid’s tail seafoam green, her flowing hair coppery red, the wooden chest warm brown, and the pearls creamy white with pale pink shadows. Use sharp colored pencils for the necklace beads, shell bra, tiny fish, and coral branches so the small curves stay clear. Try making the bubbles fade from light aqua at the bottom to almost white at the top, as if they are carrying the chest’s sparkle upward.

Under the hush of the shellbank, where sand felt cool as sifted flour, Kiva clicked two clamshells together and invented a game. Each player would pass one smooth marker from palm to palm and name a happy sound: ping of pearl, hush of fin, pop of bubble. But Kiva had no marker round enough, so she slipped beyond her cozy hollow toward the old trade chest near the waving sea grass. A sleepy urchin blocked the path, rattling its spines like dry seeds. To pass without poking it, Kiva unfastened her favorite bracelet and rolled the beads away, one by one, until the urchin followed their tiny taps.

The chest smelled faintly of saltwood and sunken maps. Inside, coins winked, pearls glowed, and one little shell sat curved like a smile. Kiva lifted it, and joy swelled in her chest so big it bumped against her ribs. “This one wants everyone’s hand,” she whispered. Back home, she did not keep the first turn. She placed the shell in a shy crab’s claw, then a wrasse’s fin, then an eel’s careful loop, and every happy sound made the water warmer. If you spot the shell in Kiva’s hand, you’ll know the game has just begun: click, hush, pop, under the cool shellbank sand.
