🎨 How to color it

Color the marine dinosaur deep teal with lighter sea-green markings, the kelp olive and emerald, the coral peach, and the spiral shell sandy cream. Use sharp colored pencils for the dinosaur’s many skin patches and the shell’s tight rings, then switch to smoother strokes for the broad neck and open water. Try fading the background from pale aqua at the top to darker blue near the rocks so the long curved body feels suspended in deep water.

Every evening, when the water turned blue as polished stone, Sable tucked a flat shell button beneath her flipper and swam the same quiet circle around the deep reef. She wanted to hear the midnight hum her mother had once described, so she waited beside the kelp, feeling cold bubbles tickle her chin and listening past the click of shrimp and the soft hush of sand.

Until one day, a silver current slipped through the reef and warmed the shell button against her skin. Because of that, Sable held it out instead of hiding it. A thin golden note trembled from the shell, bright as sun through water. Because of that, tiny fish turned from their dark cracks, coral branches quivered, and the tall kelp bent closer as if the whole reef had ears.

“Come hear,” Sable whispered, and her joy felt too wide for one chest. Finally, she placed the button on the sandy floor where everyone could circle it. The midnight hum rose around them, round and low, and if you visit this deep reef in your colors, see whether the spiral shell still seems warm with the same blue-as-polished-stone evening.
