🎨 How to color it

Layer the raptor’s angular scales in moss green, color the hanging leaves deep emerald, shade the ferns blue-green, and make the broken rocks warm sandstone. Use sharp pencils and work section by section through the many small polygon shapes, saving the long claws and teeth for careful last strokes. For a striking twist, blend a soft golden light along the raptor’s lifted neck and raised hand, as if a hidden jungle opening is glowing there.

Sable and the Listening Leaves — Before the leaves of Glassfern Jungle learned to answer, they only rattled. Read the full story →

Before the leaves of Glassfern Jungle learned to answer, they only rattled. Sable walked beneath them at dusk, following the smallest sound: tick-tick, hush, tick-tick, a noise like rain caught inside a shell. She wanted to know what made it. Curiosity pulled her past cool stone roots and peppery ferns until she reached the old vine arch, where every branch went still.

The sound came again, not from the canopy, not from the rocks, but from the hollow of her own lifted claw. In the print she had made in wet clay lay a clear amber seed, warm as held sunlight. “Were you hiding under me?” Sable whispered. The seed pulsed once, and every pointed leaf above her turned its flat face toward the glow.

When she set the seed into the crook of the vine arch, the jungle breathed out a green, glassy chime. Ever since, Glassfern leaves tilt toward any quiet question, because the first answer was found where nobody thought to look: inside Sable’s own step.
